Calcium chloride (chemical formula CaCl2) is the ionic compound of calcium and chlorine. It is a salt that behaves as a typical ionic halide, being solid at room temperature and highly soluble in water. Calcium chloride is hygroscopic in nature meaning it attracts moisture from the air and its surroundings. It can help to absorb moisture in air and gases and also used as additives in liquids for the removal of dissolved or suspended water.  Its ice-melting is made possible by the extreme heat produced during its dissolution. Calcium chloride can also be used to hasten the initial setting of concrete.
