Follow industry best practices for dust control on gravel roads to achieve optimal results. Here are our top ten tips for ensuring a successful dust control program.

Preparation

  1. Prepare
    Prepare and clear your culverts before applying dust control products.
  2. Fix potholes
    Repair all potholes and grade the road with a 4-6% crown to facilitate even liquid distribution and prevent water from pooling in low areas.
  3. Go deep
    Fluff or open the road surface as deeply as possible. This will increase the migration of the dust control liquid and enhance its longevity.
  4. Pre-wet
    Apply water to the surface before using dust control products for roads. This step breaks the road’s surface tension and allows the liquid to penetrate fully.

Application

  1. Dust control liquid
    Use a dust control liquid over traditional solids. The preferred liquids are calcium chloride and magnesium chloride for dust control.
  2. Use a fan spray nozzle
    A fan spray nozzle is ideal for dust control. It creates a wide, flat spray pattern that ensures even coverage. Make sure the nozzle has a controllable pressurized spray bar. This will allow you to apply the dust control liquid at the correct application rate, whether going uphill or downhill.
  3. Apply at the correct rate
    Apply the dust control solution at a rate of 0.25 to 0.3 gallons per square yard for optimal effectiveness.
  4. Avoid rainy conditions
    Do not apply the dust control liquid during or immediately before heavy rain, as this can dilute and wash away the product, preventing proper penetration and effectiveness.
  5. Apply at the right time
    Apply the liquid during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or evening, to minimize moisture loss due to evaporation. This improves penetration and helps maintain the effectiveness of dust control on roads.
  6. Adjust reapplication rates
    If a top-up application is needed later in the season, reduce the application rate by 50%. Many users find that this reduced rate still delivers the same great results.
